University of Jaffna Faculty of Graduate studies
Faculty of Graduate Studies of the University of Jaffna established in May, 2009 under the provisions of No. 48 A (1) of the University Act. According to the procedures and guidelines of the Faculty of Graduate Studies Ordinance No.3 of 1987, the Faculty of Graduate Studies performs its administrative and academic activities. It gives pleasure to record the brief history and achievements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
University of Jaffna Introduction
The University Grants Commission at its meeting held on 11th June 1999 approved the establishment of a Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Jaffna to promote and to co-ordinate Postgraduate Programmes at this University. The Faculty of Graduate Studies is committed to excellence in teaching, research and scholarship in diverse fields of advanced learning to be of service to the Country.
University of Jaffna Field of Studies and Degrees
The University awards the following Postgraduate Degrees to candidates who have fulfilled the necessary requirements to the satisfaction of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Senate of the University of Jaffna:
- Master of Science
- Master of Arts
- Master of Education
- Master of Philosophy
- Doctor of Philosophy
The University also awards the following Postgraduate Diplomas to candidates who have fulfilled the necessary requirements to the satisfaction of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Senate of the University of Jaffna:
- Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
- Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science.
The field of study for which a candidate registers for postgraduate studies shall fall into one of the following:
- Agricultural Sciences
- Development Studies
- Earth Sciences and Environmental Studies
- Education
- Historical and Social Studies
- Languages and Cultural Studies
- Life Sciences
- Management and Commerce
- Medical Sciences
- Physical Sciences
- Religious and Philosophical Studies
University of Jaffna Master’s Degree (Taught Courses)
Presently the Faculty of Graduate Studies offers the following taught courses for Master’s Degree. The duration of these taught Postgraduate programmes is one academic year. Generally the candidate shall be a graduate of a recognized University. In addition, depending on the nature of the Master Degree programmes the candidate has to fulfill some other requirements prescribed under each programme.
