About Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology
The Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR) was organized on the 1st January 1986, by arrangement out dated 18th December 1985, under section 24A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 by the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR) Grants Commission. The Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR) is a Postgraduate Institute of the University of Kelaniya. It is the perfect institution for postgraduate scientific tests and analysis in archaeology and subjects associated to archaeology in the country.
The Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR) is housed at 407 Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 in a historical building initially used as a Government Residence for arrest officers. At present it has four gadgets of properties which include the historic building. A new 3-storey building was built in 2009 with adequate space for teaching and faculty offices. Current administration and most of the lab work are accomplished in 2 single storey non permanent buildings.

Post Graduate Diploma in Museology
Entry Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree (special or General) and must be carried out in museums or relevant field.
- Non graduate applicants –are permitted to taxation the program and on conclusion a certificate will be honored.
Target Group
The program is mainly designed for graduate personnel of the Department of National Museums, Archaeological Department, Department of National Archives and the Central Cultural Fund. A Restrained number of areas are
available to workers employed in museums and selections run by other government departments, Universities and non-public corporations and also to museum specialists from other countries in the area, those who have equivalent educational and training conditions.

Archaeology
Introduction
The Masters Degree program in Archaeology is developed to provide large numbers of Diploma Graduates who don’t have a benefit pass and also the greater part of the students, those who aim to get a higher degree. The principal aim of presenting the trained program of M. A. in Archaeology, for those who subsides the Diploma in Archaeology.

- History of South Indian Art
- Ancient Civilizations

Course Structure
Program comprises only the lectures and at the end of the program the applicant should post an specific research paper. Each program has 2 semesters.
Duration of the Course
2 years (24 months) in duration, commencing from January each year. The lecture hours are as follows
Saturday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Sunday 9:00 am – 4.00 pm
Location of class – Classes are generally held at the PGIAR premises.

Master of Science in Archaeology
Introduction
The Masters Degree program in Archaeology has been intended with a sizeable aspect of field and practical work and was initially supposed to build a body of academically certified professional Archaeologists. Applicants who exceeded the Diploma in Archeology with a merit, can upgrade to MSc. degree in Archaeology.

Course Structure
To be entitled for the degree, all students should acquire a total of 40 credits. 15 credits from Postgraduate Diploma in Archaeology, and further more 10 credits from assignments. The left over 15 credits should be attained from 5 of the above program units.
The Title of candidate’s suggested project should be handed in by a form, before commencing the 2nd unit, if you want to get the authorization from the academics staff.
Dissertation should be finished under guidance of employed supervisors and passed over within 6 months after conclusion of the examination.
Duration of the Course
Two years (twenty four months) in duration, starting from January each year. The Hours of lecture are as follows:
- Saturday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
- Sunday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Location – Classes are generally held at the PGIAR premises.
Students should complete attendance at least 70% of the lecture sessions. Facilities are provided for classes outside the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR) premises, when required.
