The foundation of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts can be tracked back to the year 1893, the era in which the Ceylon Technical College was organized. Drawing and Design were among the initial programs to be taught there.
Around 5 decades later, on the 1st of October 1949, the Department of Arts and Aesthetics altered its locality from Horton Place to Haywood College. The following renaming of the institution to the “School of Art” marked yet another hallmark in the fable of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts. The School conferred the Diploma in Fine Arts upon conclusion of 6 years of study.
