PGIS is a National Institute founded by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in 1996. The Director is the most important executive, academic and accounting officer of the Institute while the Board of Management is the major authority of the institute. The Institute is affixed to the University of Peradeniya and will depend on on the university for method and rendering of its academics programmes and the award of postgraduate degrees.

PGIS M-Phil Admission Requirements
- an M. Sc. degree from a recognized university/institution in the related area of study
- a transfer from an M. Sc. programme executed by the PGIS as mentioned
- a B. Sc. Special Degree from a accepted university/institution in the related area of study
- a B. Sc. General Degree from a realised university/institution with subject/s related to the area of study
- any other comparative qualification satisfactory to the PGIS
- any other necessity/s as stipulated by the pertinent Board of Study.
PGIS Application Procedure
Applications are kept entertained by the PGIS throughout the year. Every application for enrolment must be made in duplicate on the prescribed by doctors forms accessible from the PGIS on payment of a nonrefundable application-processing fee. If the application form is downloaded from PGIS web site, payment of application processing fee should be made at the time of submission of carried out application form to the Postgraduate Institute of Science office.
PGIS Ph. D
The minimum conditions for registration are:
- a transfer from an M. Phil. programme executed by the PGIS on the suggestions of the relevant Board of Study
- a Masters Degree in the related field obtained after a full-time research aspect of at least 2 years duration
- any other comparative qualifications suitable to the PGIS.
- any other requirement/s as stipulated by the relevant Board of Study.
